A subsidiary of globally focused DSI Underground has acquired virtual reality company Edvirt.
The subsidiary, DSI Underground SMART, said the move will boost its capabilities for innovation and efficiency at mines and tunnelling operations.
Sweden-based Edvirt will continue to operate as a standalone company and serve an international customer base while being a part of the DSI family of intelligent, digital solutions.
However, the purchase also comes amid Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions’ takeover of DSI. That deal is projected to close in mid-2021 pending regulatory approvals, after which both DSI and Edvirt will fall under the Sandvik business umbrella.
Michael Reich, CEO of DSI Underground, said: "Today, simulator-based, remote training courses and certification programs are increasingly becoming part of our daily business. DSI Underground SMART and Edvirt will be able to offer an unmatched virtual training offering supporting safety and productivity across the underground development cycle.”
Added Tomislav Rogan, CEO of Edvirt: “Our mission has from the start been to develop the industry to become safer and smarter, utilizing intelligent digital solutions such as training simulators. We are therefore very excited to join the DSI Underground and Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions family.”
Edvirt is an edtech company. DSI Underground, prior to its acquisition, had a presence in 70 countries with a focus on ground support products and services.
