MONGOLIA - Videos capture impact of mining

The dramatic expansion of Mongolian mine sites from initial diggings to their present size has been captured using satellite imagery for the first time by researchers at The University of Queensland’s Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI). The two videos show satellite footage of the mine sites, the surrounding urbanization, new roads and illegal small-scale or ‘ninja’ mining sites.

KAZAKHSTAN - Mechel sells Voskhod plant

Mechel OAO, one of Russia’s leading mining and metals companies, has closing the deal for disposal of 100% shares in the Voskhod Mining Plant at Khromtau in Kazakhstan and for the Tikhvin Ferroalloy Plant in the Leningrad region of Russia to Turkey’s YILDIRIM Group for US$425 million.
