The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) has suspended the mining operations of publicly-listed Marcventures Mining & Development Corp for violations of the mining law. The MGB says the decision came after an investigation showed the company was operating outside its mining tenement which the company had earlier denied.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources conducted the investigation after receiving complaints about its illegal operation. The complaint called for the cancellation of the company’s mineral-processing and sharing agreement MPSA with the MGB.

Marventures holds a mineral production sharing agreement for a 4799-hectare tenement located in Cantilan, Surigao del Sur. However, a multi-disciplinary team found that the company was mining in Carracas town, which is outside the approved mining area. Upon inspection, it was established that the company was extracting nickel outside its approved area apparently because indigenous peoples are preventing the company from mining in Cantilan.
