Weir Minerals Canada (WMC) has delivered three Multiflo reclaim water barges to Suncor Energy’s TRO oil sands project in Alberta, Canada. The mining equipment solutions supplier won the contract in early 2010 to design, fabricate, assemble and launch the three reclaim water barges for the project which is about 30km north of Fort McMurray.
WMC contractors completed construction in the past few months prior to hand-over for commissioning, with the system now fully operational.
“Our reputation as a premier mining equipment solutions provider netted the company its largest single order in its history,” says Weir Minerals divisional managing director Scot Smith. “It illustrates our successful effort in exploring adjacent market opportunities and moving up the value chain; taking the company beyond traditional supplier of pumps, to being a systems integrator and premier mining equipment solutions provider.”
Weir’s Multiflo reclaim water barges are an integral part of tailings management solutions in oil sands applications.
The company’s mega-barge project is a culmination of months of effort on the part of several key groups within WMC. A cross-functional team of people from sales, product management and engineering led by the design centre team in Mississauga, Ontario, with support from the sales teams in Calgary, Alberta, and Hazleton, Pennsylvania worked diligently for months prior to the award of the order.
The complete turnkey project includes design, fabrication, on-site construction, launch and supply of all equipment including Hazleton pumps, barges, mechanical, electrical, process control and marine design.
Weir Minerals employs almost 7,000 people worldwide delivering end-to-end solutions for all mining, dewatering, transportation, milling, processing and waste management activities.
