Three new Sandvik Mining bolter-miners are being delivered to major underground coal mines in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, adding to a fleet of more than 20 other machines in the region.

Sandvik says its ability to deliver the machines ahead of schedule, as well as their reputation for high quality and reliability was the key factor in winning the order.

The company’s manager of capital equipment sales, Greg Giles, says the two MB650s and MB670 will greatly add to the capacity at the Bowen operations. “These machines are recognized as being the best on the market, very reliable and easily adaptable to a wide range of mine site situations.

“Manufactured in Zeltweg, Austria, they have the best of European technology built into them, and that’s reflected in their proven reputation. Typically it takes around 14 months from order to delivery, but we were able to deliver within a much shorter time frame for these particular machines,” he says.

The new machines will be serviced out of Sandvik’s Mackay and Emerald facilities which currently service the existing fleet.

Sandvik’s MB600 series, which includes the MB650 and MB670, is designed for rapid entry roadway development. “The outstanding feature of these machines is their proven ability to simultaneously cut and bolt, thus dramatically increasing development rates. Bolting rigs are an integrated part of all models in the MB600 series, and up to four roof bolters and two rib bolters can be fitted, allowing them to install bolts close to the face for safety and stability,” says Greg Giles.

Other features include a support canopy behind the cutter drum, incorporating integrated rib protection for increased operator safety, stability and ergonomics, data logging, including machine health monitoring, with integrated reporting and low pick tip speed for reduced dust generation.

Sandvik Mining is a business area within the Sandvik Group and a leading global supplier of equipment and tools, service and technical solutions for the mining industry. Its product range includes machines for rock drilling, rock cutting, rock crushing, loading and hauling and materials handling.
