Joy Global’s new P&H 4100XPC AC electric mining shovel, delivered in May, is playing a key part in the performance and growth of Rolleston Coal in Queensland through better cycle time and utilization, improved job efficiency and higher rates of availability for a whole new level of performance.

“This new P&H 4100XPC AC electric mining shovel loads our 325 tonne trucks in three passes, which enables us to move more dirt more quickly and reach our production goals faster,” says Joy Global Australasia’s director, Sales and Marketing Mining Products, Simon Ridgway. “The shovel has achieved a record 55,000 BCMs moved in one standard shift (12 hours) during October with the Rolleston Coal personnel,” he says. “Previously no shovel has broken the 50,000 BCM barrier.”

Assembly of the shovel began in January 2013 during one of the hottest weeks in recent Australian history where the temperatures exceeded 40 degrees ambient. Joy Global worked closely with Glencore management to ensure the shovel was delivered safely with no lost time injuries or medical treatment injuries, on-time and on budget.

With the successful delivery and commissioning of this latest machine, Joy Global continues to partner with Glencore to increase production and productivity at Rolleston Coal.

“The performance of the Rolleston electric mining shovel has set a benchmark for AC machines in Australia, in the last two months this machine has had an average availability rate of over 95%,” says Simon Ridgway.  “We’re very pleased to partner with Glencore and look forward to supporting them in the longer term to continuously improve the performance of the 4100XPC AC.”

The new shovel combines the proven Centurion electrical control system, industry leading IGBT AC technology, rugged structures and the industry’s only OEM-owned field service and support network.

“We are already seeing a number of benefits from the new shovel”, says Rolleston Coal operations manager Phil Price. “It is helping to increase productivity levels in a safe and reliable manner, so has fast become an important piece of equipment at the mine.”

This is the first AC shovel for Rolleston Coal and follows on from the success of its sister P&H 4100XPC AC electric mining shovel, which is also performing to expectations at Bulga Coal in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales. This is the sixth 4100XPC AC shovel to be delivered by Joy Global within Australasia.

Rolleston Coal is a joint venture between Glencore Coal Queensland (75%), Sumisho Coal Australia and IRCA Rolleston (both 12.5%). Located 275km due west of Gladstone in the Bowen Basin, the mine is 16km from the town of Rolleston in the Central Highlands Regional Council area.
