A drill program will be considered during the next six months by Lincoln Minerals after new field work confirmed high grade extensions to the strike length of its Uno manganese project in South Australia.
The company says the sampling results from the northern Eyre Peninsula project warrant the identification of potential drill targets.
Assay results from the field work, which was completed in October, confirm the high grade manganese and iron potential of the prospect with up to 52% manganese oxide and 59.9% iron oxide in surface samples, associated with up to 0.16% copper, 0.25% cobalt, 4.5 grams/tonne silver, 0.13% nickel and 0.1% zinc.
Uno is about 100km north-west of Whyalla, within the highly prospective Gawler Craton which hosts several base and precious metals prospects and deposits, including Trafford Resources’ Telephone Dam lead-zinc-silver prospect and the Paris prospect owned by Investigator Resources which has confirmed bonanza-grade silver.
There were 22 rock chip samples collected at various locations along the strike and lateral extents of the surface outcrop. Several small hand dug pits confirmed continuity under thin soil cover with these samples, with one hand dug hole in the middle of Uno finishing in greater than 20% grade manganese oxide and 40% iron oxide.
Lincoln is also encouraged by the anomalous copper, cobalt, zinc and silver associated with the manganese and iron oxides at Uno, believing it has potential for copper-cobalt-zinc-silver mineralization at depth.
The company’s managing director Dr John Parker says planning is under way to drill test the vertical and lateral extents of mineralization at the prospect in early-mid 2012.
Manganese is the fourth most used metal after iron, aluminium and copper, with demand for the metal primarily driven by the steel industry which consumes 94% of the manganese ore produced. Infrastructure growth in developing countries like China and India has more than doubled demand for manganese ore in the last decade from those nations.
