Reynolds Soil Technologies, known for its fine particle management expertise, has now expanded its services to include dust control for underground mining applications as well as tunneling.
RST said it developed methods for sealing dust to walls, roofs, roads and hardstand areas for longer periods of time, and without the need for ongoing watering programmes. The developments were made in response to industry demand for preventative measures to suppress dust emissions from both applications, it added.
In fact, RST operations and technical director David Handel said that tunnels and underground mines require a broad range of targeted control methods in order to control dust emissions adequately.
“Dust emissions from underground mining and tunnelling activities move around the tunnel systems by ventilation and machinery air displacement with unsafe levels of build-up occurring on walls and roofs, Handel said. “Without targeted treatment, ongoing air displacement causes the dust to become dislodged and become airborne again.”
RST’s overall strategy for dust mitigation targets each surface separately with specific dust suppression strategies. That is achieved by customising the areas with specialised chemistry that is based on determining factors like material type, water quality, application procedures, duration and durability.
The team identified its products – RT20 Dynamic Stabiliser, Shield All Weather Road, Guardian Road Binder and Zero Waterless Dust Suppressant – for treatment of roads and hardstand surfaces in underground mines and tunnels. In each case, treatments are tailored and applied in conjunction or separately.
“RST also strongly recommends using a foaming dust suppressant for materials handling, which is far more effective than plain water as the foam expands water and binds dust particles for greater lengths of time so significantly less water is required to achieve the highest levels of dust control efficiency,” Handel said. “For this purpose, a fine particle specialist will assess the materials being handled and select the suitable treatment: RT60 Spray Plus or Hi-Foam dust suppressants, for application at loading bins, crushers or belt transfer points to suppress dust where the falling material opens up.”
RST said it will provide a complete range of product dosage, application and spray equipment to a customer, but prior to that the company will conduct an evaluation to determine what is best suited to an operation.
